Andy Erickon’s Leviathan is a rare bird in California. While the Golden State seems to have no shortage of both budget bin blends and high dollar proprietary reds, exceptionally well made 95pt Cabernet blends for only $33.94 aren’t so common. Andy Erickson already has plenty of 100pt scores and cult Cabs to his credit (Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Mayacamas),but now he can add to the list “one of the best values in California” (Galloni).

Crafted from Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot, and Cab Franc, this is an outrageously good value from a winemaker who is pretty much known for everything but. Andy Erickson may not be used to making wines that cost less than several hundred dollars, but given how good Leviathan has turned out in 2019 we think he should make a habit of it! With 95pts this is an unmissable vintage and one we’d be equally happy to serve on a Tuesday night as we would on a special occasion.

Andy Erickson is virtually the definition of a rockstar winemaker, with one of the most impressive resumes in California. While the price tags on many of his most well known wines are enough to make your head spin, with the Leviathan we’re happy to see him making a wine we easily load up on by the case. No compromises seem to be made on the Leviathan, with top AVAs like Coombsiville and Moon Mountain featured in the blend, and typically about 25% aged in new French oak. 2019 was another wonderful vintage for California, and one you should definitely stock up on. Cheers!

95 points, James Suckling: "Very pure fruit this year with ripe raspberries and fresh currants throughout. Full-to medium-bodied with soft, polished tannins and bright, clean fruit. It’s really balanced and the finish and makes you want to drink it. Subtle and vivid fruit at the end. Yet, it can improve with age. Blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and petite verdot."

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck: "Always a value, the 2019 California Red Wine is a juicy, up-front, undeniably delicious red with plenty of red, black, and blue fruits as well as graphite, leafy herbs, and chalky mineral nuances. Medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and seamless, it's a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming 8-10 years at a minimum."
