It can be nearly impossible for the dry wines of the Douro to break through when vintage Port dominates most conversations, but the best are now comparable to what we find in Burgundy, for both reds and whites. The wealth of old-vine field blends, thousands of years of vinous history, and renewed investment have all contributed to this shift, but perhaps no one has contributed more than Niepoort. Dirk Niepoort has turned his 180-year-old family business into a pioneer when it comes to the dry wines of the region, and their top whites “are among the Douro’s most sought after trophies in most vintages” (Wine Advocate). The Redoma Reserva Branco is a remarkable effort, styled very much like a grand cru Burgundy. With a melange of dried and spiced fruits supported by a fine thread of acidity, “this is one of Douro’s great whites” (Suckling).

Over the past 40 years Dirk Niepoort has shifted focus towards estate vineyards rather than purchased fruit, and despite their reputation for fortified wines, the dry wines account for ¾ of their production. The parcels for the Redoma Reserva Branco are planted with 80+ year old vines at nearly 2,000’ up in the hills of the Douro’s right bank, in the subzone of Murça. A field blend of local varieties, this is a wildly complex and characterful white that is rightly considered among the best Niepoort has to offer.

96 points, James Suckling: “Lemon curd, dried mangoes, pineapple and some spices on the nose. The palate is full- bodied with a ripe yet balanced profile, but with a spark of acidity that brings it all together. Very long, with a very elegant sense of density and texture. Layered, harmonious, and well-integrated within its style, this is one of Douro’s great whites.”

95 points, Wine Advocate: “The white 2023 Redoma Reserva Branco unfurls layers of added complexity tasted next to the Redoma Branco from this same vintage. They use older vines for this, a selection of vineyards from the zone of Murça, a sort of premier cru if you like. It fermented and matured in used and slightly younger barrels for nine months. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol and is spicy, floral and herbal, with notes of green tea and pollen, a smoky twist and a balanced and streamlined palate with fine minerality, fine-grained and with a dry, tasty finish.”
