Niepoort’s Redoma Reserva Branco 2023 is a flagship Douro DOC white built around old-vine field blends and a clear emphasis on freshness. The grapes come from mixed plantings of traditional varieties—Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Arinto, Viosinho and others—grown on mica-schist soils at higher elevations (about 400–600 meters) on the cooler right bank of the Douro. As James Suckling notes, it is “sourced from the cooler right bank of the river,” a detail that helps explain the wine’s acidity and line despite the region’s warm reputation.
In the glass, the wine leans toward ripe citrus and tropical fruit while keeping a firm structure. Suckling’s note highlights “lemon curd, dried mangoes, pineapple and some spices,” followed by a palate that is “full-bodied with a ripe yet balanced profile,” lifted by “a spark of acidity.” He also calls out its length and tactile feel: “Very long, with a very elegant sense of density and texture.” His 96-point score is an excellent review, and he goes as far as calling it “one of Douro’s great whites.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez) also rates it highly at 95 points—another excellent review—emphasizing complexity and site selection. Gutiérrez writes that the 2023 “unfurls layers of added complexity,” sourced from “a selection of vineyards from the zone of Murça, a sort of premier cru if you like.” He reports nine months of fermentation and maturation in “used and slightly younger barrels,” and confirms the wine’s modest 12.5% alcohol.
The flavor profile, as described by Gutiérrez, shifts toward savory and mineral tones: “spicy, floral and herbal, with notes of green tea and pollen,” plus “a smoky twist” and “fine minerality… with a dry, tasty finish.” Production was comparatively large for this cuvée at “35,000+ bottles,” and it was “bottled in July 2024.” Both critics suggest it has the balance and integration to drink now, with capacity to hold.
