Rudi Pichler’s approach to Gruner Veltliner has earned him a reputation for ultra traditional winemaking, as well as a strong appreciation for the nuances of terroir across his 15ha of vines in the Wachau. These are “some of the purest and most mouthwatering wines of the region” (Decanter), and whether or not you are already familiar with Pichler’s wines, this estate-grown Federspiel Gruner is a must try. The family farm dates back to the early 1700s but it wasn’t fully devoted to wine until the 1970s. Ironically, it took a trip to Napa to inspire Pichler to go into the family business, and since taking charge in the 1980s he has set about honoring the traditional winemaking styles and methods of his hometown. Today “Rudi Pichler turns out world-class wines” (Vinous) with a strong focus on Gruner Veltliner from single vineyards, but this bone-dry Federspiel is a superb introduction to his style, drawn from 20 parcels across the estate.

92 points, James Suckling: “Very fresh and crisp, with plenty of substance. There’s green peppercorn and garden herb character on the barely medium-bodied palate. So clean and straight in the long, herbal and appley finish.”

91 points, Vinous: “Rich yeast, imbued with russet pear peel, is fragrant on the nose, giving away a slight sense of pepper. The palate is juicy and ripe but has a lovely stony aspect amidst its creaminess. There is concentration, savoriness and well-contained but undoubted power, especially for a Federspiel. More air brings more savoriness with a lovely echo of white pepper. (Bone-dry)”

“Exciting” is how Rudi Pichler described 2023 - the wines are as linear and taut as ever, even if the fruit flavors are in a riper spectrum. - Vinous
