Despite not being one of the highest rated Cheval Blancs I have always had a soft spot for the 1970. It is a smooth, velvety wine with sweet gobs of liquorice, toffee and gravel that somehow – as many mature Cheval Blancs do – resembles the same flavours you will find in mature vintages of Haut Brion (!) 1970 Cheval Blanc offers a round and pleasing taste with telltale notes of toffee caramel and tobacco. It has a crunchy feel, and a fruity cassis like taste and is soft as silk. It always stood in the shadow of the 1971 but certainly stands up to the test being a fresh, classic and nice wine which is drinking very nice now. It is fully mature providing an elegant mature river of fruit flowing nice and steady with silky and soft undertones. From regular bottes I would recommend drinking it now as it seems to be ‘there’. - Ivar Bjurner

The 1970 Cheval Blanc is drinking very nicely, offering up aromas of sweet plummy fruit mingled with notions of burning embers, tobacco leaf, violets and cedar. Medium-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, supple, largely melted tannins and a persistent finish, rumors of its demise are much exaggerated. - William Kelley
