Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2009

A fabulous example the 1990 Troplong Mondot is only equaled by such recent vintages as 2000 2005 and 2008. The inky/garnet/plum/purple-colored 1990 exhibits notes of coffee blackberries licorice camphor and espresso. Rich...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, November 2006

A deep garnet core with brick rim. The nose is reticent at first and then develops and gorgeous nose of cepes, dried prune, wet sand - quite Pomerol in style. The full-bodied palate is rich and decadent though not over...

Wine Spectator, August 2000

A blockbuster. Amazing. I love Port and this is close. Dark color. Very very ripe on the nose. Full-bodied and very chewy with loads of fruit and concentration in tannins. Mouthpuckering. Needs time.--1990 Bordeaux...

Bordeaux’s Chateau Troplong-Mondot is a large wine estate on the Right Bank of the Gironde River overlooking the village of Saint Emilion. Its 33-hectare vineyard is planted traditionally with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The chateau dates back to 1745 and Troplong-Mondot was originally part of one sizeable domaine which included the vineyards of Chateau Pavie. The current estate was established in 1850 when Raymond-Theodore Troplong acquired Mondot, expanded the vineyard, and promoted its reputation. Following a trend of that period, his heir Edouard Troplong later added Mondot to his name and Troplong-Mondot was born.

The property passed into the hands of the Valette family at the beginning of the 20th century, with Christine Valette taking up management of the property in 1980. Since then, things quickly changed for the better. The quality of the wines improved and Chateau Troplong-Mondot became known as one of the top wines of the Right Bank.

Christine Valette has since passed away and today, the estate is managed by Xavier Pariente who has been involved with the estate since 2002. In 2006, it was awarded the Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the Saint Emilion classification.

Chateau Troplong-Mondot is grown on extensive vineyards rich in limestone and clay soils. Powerful and well-structured with pronounced complex tannins, its deep aromas of truffles and blackberries develop over time.

The grapes are hand-harvested, totally destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, moving to oak barrels for secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine is matured in oak barrels (75% new oak and 25% one-year old) for 12 to 24 months depending on the vintage. The average production of the grand vin is between 60,000 to 90,000 bottles.

The 1990 Troplong-Mondot is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend from the prestigious Saint Emilion region of Bordeaux, France. With its dark and intense color, this red wine immediately captures the eye and promises a sensory experience like no other. The vineyards of Troplong-Mondot have produced a true masterpiece with this vintage, and it has garnered high praise from renowned wine critics.

Upon first approach, the nose is somewhat reticent but soon reveals a captivating array of aromas. Notes of very ripe fruit, reminiscent of Port wine, emanate from the glass. As the wine opens up, additional scents of coffee, licorice, and camphor emerge, adding complexity to the bouquet.

On the palate, the 1990 Troplong-Mondot is a true heavyweight. Full-bodied and chewy, it showcases an incredible concentration of fruit flavors, perfectly balanced by the substantial tannins. The mouthfeel is rich and velvety, leaving a lasting impression. This wine is described as "mouthpuckering," a testament to its power and depth.

Wine Spectator awarded this vintage an impressive score of 95 points, noting that it needs some additional cellaring time before reaching its peak. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it an even higher score of 98 points, placing it alongside other exceptional vintages. Neal Martin's Wine Journal also praised this wine, emphasizing its similarities to the revered Petrus.

With its outstanding quality and aging potential, the 1990 Troplong-Mondot is a wine that demands attention. It is recommended to hold onto this bottle for a few more years to allow it to fully develop and reveal its true potential. Once it reaches its prime, it will undoubtedly provide a magnificent drinking experience.
