In contrast to the rather sordid Bric del Fiasc from Scavino, the 1998 Cannubi from Chiara Boschis is a very well-made, more modern style of Barolo that I could actually enjoy having in some depth in the cellar. The bouquet is deep, quite vibrant and attractive, as it jumps from the glass in a blaze of sappy red and black cherries, tarry tones, licorice, fresh herbs, lovely minerality, a touch of nutskins and plenty of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and focused, with a rock solid core of fruit, tangy acids, firm tannins and excellent length and grip on the finish. This clearly needs some time to more fully soften, but it possesses very good potential. I would like it even better with less new wood, but this is a very well-made and attractive bottle of Barolo.
