It's a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc. I was lucky enough to drink some over the weekend when a friend brought a bottle to dinner. It was stunning. It's so deep and characterful yet refined and subtle. It showed aromas of wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dry black olives came out as well. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Very fresh and just opening up now. Walnut and chocolate character. So youthful. Decant two or three hours before serving.

Some dark chocolate too. Complex nose. Very full-bodied with dense dark fruits and a licorice undertone yet the huge tannin structure is polished and almost seamless. A massive and powerful wine yet balanced and refined. Fantastic. Just a beautiful baby still.-'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2012. -JS

The 1998 Petrus is unquestionably a fabulous effort boasting a dense plum/purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of black fruits intermixed with caramel mocha and vanilla. Exceptionally pure super-concentrated and extremely full-bodied with admirable underlying acidity as well as sweet tannin it reveals a superb mid-palate in addition to the luxurious richness for which this great property is known. The finish lasts for 40-45 seconds. Patience will definitely be required. Production was 2400 cases about 1600 cases less than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2040

It just builds gloriously in the glass, multi-dimensional, quite exhilarating nose of blackberry leaf, red cherries, pomegranate and that mineral intensity that is utterly beguiling. The palate has a subtle entry, wonderful balance with filigree yet firm tannins lending the wine real backbone. Exquisite poise and tension, slightly graininess in the last third that has a slight tang of bitter cherry and blood orange. Very powerful, but a Petrus coiled and waiting to pounce in 5 to 10-years.

Multidimensional nose melds black raspberry mulberry toffee minerals rose petal and roasted oak. Great sweetness volume and depth thick but magically light on its feet. Grows broader on the back half with no loss of shape. Firm underlying backbone is currently hidden by seamless fruit. Finishes with big but noble tannins and terrific grip and subtle persistence. This and the hugely concentrated L'Eglise-Clinet may well turn out to be the two top wines of the vintage.

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.

Winery

Petrus

Little known 50 years ago, Petrus has become mythical for the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors. Among them is an exceptional terroir—located 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation—with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil.

These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape and the iron-rich clay is relatively unique within the region. As a result, the 28 acre vineyard is planted only to Merlot. Average vine age is more than 50 years, and are allowed to reach 70 years before replanting.

The approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful of the special terroir. The viticulture is fastidious—severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer—and allows perfect ripening of the fruit. Grapes are manually harvested over just two days and sorted before crush.

Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased half a share of Petrus in the early 1960s and are largely credited with its rise to fame. The company also owns many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.
