Wonderfully dark, healthy crimson with well-graded evidence of maturity. Very sturdy and solid and confident and masculine. Definite meatiness on the nose with a dusty edge. Beguiling and sumptuous with some tertiary aromas in evidence. Lovely mellow palate that is pure and dry and very sappy. You could certainly drink this already despite this chateau’s reputation for obduracy. Very complete – not particularly alcoholic with dryness and tannic bite on the finish. Really delicious, impressive wine. A really lovely bottle. Hit of mint – certainly very refreshing. This property no longer exists of course... 17.5/20

Full bodied, tannic and on the masculine side fo the style range, with 2 hours in the decanter and some effort, wet earth, tobacco, cedar chest and tobacco notes begin to emerge. Still young, perhaps 5 more years in the bottle should allow the wine to soften and develop its aromatics. From the same stable as Haut-Brion, La Tour Haut-Brion reveals a fruity, almost frivolous character that makes it immediately charming. But there is no question that the soft, rich, black jelly fruits are the mask for a more concentrated, tannic structure. Give it 5-10 years.
