jamessuckling.com, February 2011

This is very perfumed, with mushrooms, berries, and even strawberries. Full and round on the palate with soft tannins and lovely sweet finish. This is very long and balanced, but still needs time. Just starting to open up...

Still a little angular in its tannic structure but softens to show cassis and bilberry, tobacco and black chocoate, smoked earth. There is a gourmet attraction here, with a rich and creamy texture through the mid palate...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, October 2017

Elegant, refined, medium bodied and silky, with a nose of flowers, cherries, truffle and leaf. This is a very pretty wine, that is just about fully developed. The wine should remain at this level for at least 15 years, or...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2003

This is a big powerful firm wine with a top layer of ripe glamorous fruit flavors. Blackcurrant jelly fruits are shot through with ripe acidity and soft tannins...

Decanter, July 2021

This is a big, rich style of wine with a deep inner core of colour and fruit that is almost on the overripe side. The extraction seems a little more pushed, the tannins chunky and slightly chewy on the finish. That said...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, March 2010

Dark ruby. Fragrant and full bodied and flattering. Solid with some lead pencil character. A big beefy mouthful but definitively left bank. This may well be good value and provide lots of solid preasure but it will never...

Wine Spectator, December 2015

A touch more advanced than the rest of the pack, with beautiful singed alder and juniper notes starting to lead the way while the core of lightly steeped black currant and fig fruit notes is simmering nicely with subtle...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2016

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2000 Château Giscours is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 25 and October 7. The bouquet is clearly in a different...

Vinous, September 2021

The 2000 Giscours is a vintage that I last tasted at the 20th-anniversary vertical in 2015. It has a lovely nose, not powerful, but pure and less rustic than some of the others tasted, offering red plum and cedar (as I...

Chateau Giscours is a large wine estate in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. it was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Giscours has a long, rich history which can be traced back to the 14th century. The real beginning came in 1552 when Pierre de Lhomme, a wealthy Bordeaux draper, bought a nobleman’s house called “Guyscoutz”. He proceeded to turn it into a vast estate and planted the first vines.

It was in the 19th century that the estate gained much of its finery and reputation, with transformation of the chateau into a neoclassical palace, the modernization of production facilities, and the construction of large buildings. In 1995, the property was acquired by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma.

The Giscours vineyard has 102 hectares, planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot on gravel and sand. A 63-hectare plot, adjacent to Giscours but outside the Margaux boundary, is bottled as Le Haut Medoc de Giscours.

The first label of Chateau Giscours has great finesse and elegance. The aging potential of this great wine is between 8 and 20 years or even more for the most exceptional vintages.

The 2000 Giscours from Bordeaux, France is a remarkable wine that embodies the essence of the Margaux sub-region. With a deep, ruby color that catches the eye, this red wine exudes elegance and sophistication. The nose is immediately captivated by the rich bouquet of red plum, mulberry, and cedar aromas that generously waft from the glass. There is a touch of exoticism in these aromatics, with hints of stewed apricots lingering in the background, adding depth and complexity.

On the palate, the 2000 Giscours reveals its true character. This is a big, powerful, and firm wine that showcases a top layer of ripe, glamorous fruit flavors. Blackcurrant jelly fruits take center stage, shot through with ripe acidity that adds a refreshing vibrancy. Soft tannins provide structure and balance, ensuring a harmonious mouthfeel.

The critics have also been enamored by this vintage's qualities. Wine Enthusiast awarded it an impressive score of 92, praising its powerful fruit flavors and soft tannins. Wine Spectator, with a score of 91, noted the beautiful singed alder and juniper notes that lead the way, while Jancis Robinson highlighted its solid, full-bodied character.

As the wine lingers on the palate, it unveils a long and balanced finish, revealing its potential for further aging. Although it is just starting to open up now, it is recommended to give it a couple more years to fully develop. With its perfumed aromas of mushrooms, berries, and strawberries, the 2000 Giscours promises to evolve into an even more enchanting wine with time.

Overall, the 2000 Giscours is a wine of exceptional quality and finesse. Its deep inner core of color and fruit, alongside its gourmand nature, make it a standout choice for those who appreciate a plush, refined style. This vintage is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of Giscours, showcasing the best of what Bordeaux has to offer.
