Its performance was off-the-charts in two separate tastings for this report. Deep blue/purple with a nose of creme de cassis floral scents graphite and subtle smoke the wine is pure deep sumptuously textured full-bodied powerful (although certainly not at the power level of the amazing 2009). This wine certainly transcends its 13% natural alcohol and has the same level of concentration found in such great vintages of La Mission Haut-Brion as 1989 1982 1975 and of course more recent efforts such as 2005 2008 and 2009. Still young but beginning to display some secondary nuances the wine has enormous layers of depth as well as an unctuous texture. Even though it is still quite youthful I believe it will hit its prime in another 3-4 years and last 50 or more. It is certainly a wine that will likely jump dramatically in price once the price of the 2009 is released.

...At the moment it is closed solid and chunky but all the right hints are there and it will develop slowly and in a sustained way over many years...

Lovely aromas of dried lavender crushed berries and minerals. Full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a medium finish of tobacco berry and dark chocolate. A balanced and very pretty young red. Not quite as exciting... Lovely aromas of dried lavender crushed berries and minerals. Full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a medium finish of tobacco berry and dark chocolate. A balanced and very pretty young red. Not quite as exciting as in barrel but clearly outstanding. Best after 2010. (JS)

Label

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion is definitely bewitching. It possesses a great intensity that delights with complex red fruits and and the signature of its terroir showing notes of Havana cigars, chocolate, and roasted cedarwood. On the palate, the wine is spherical and generous with a long, silky finish.

Winery

Mission Haut Brion, La

Winery Description: Created by the noble Lestonnac family in the early years of the 16th century, the vineyard of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion owes its name and its reputation to a missionary order commonly known as the Lazarites, who held the property from 1682 until the French Revolution.

The property is situated just opposite that of Chateau Haut-Brion, in the Pessac-Leognan appellation of the Northern Graves region. The vineyard covers an area of 29 hectares of which 26.60 hectares are planted with 42.7% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10.3% Cabernet Franc with an annual production of 6,000 to 7,000 cases. Over 3 hectares are devoted to white grape varieties (Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc).

In 1983, the Dillon family, already owners of Chateau Haut-Brion, added Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion to Domaine Clarence Dillon’s holdings. The new owners immediately set to work on an ambitious renovation program for the property, giving La Mission a new lease on life.

In the space of twenty-five years, the Dillon family, having fallen under the spell of this enchanting estate, successfully completed their impressive makeover of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion so that for many years to come , it might continue to offer wine connoisseurs the world over a little glimpse of paradise in each bottle.
