The 2001 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a magical wine, soaring from the glass with scents of peonies, wild berries, orange rind, wilted rose petals and warm spices. Full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, this has an ample core of fruit, melting tannins and a bright spine of acidity; and it's that spine that distinguishes it from the similarly charming, perfumed but also softer, suppler 2000 vintage. I hadn't tasted this since 2008 and it has largely arrived at its peak with some bricking evident at the rim along with mostly secondary aromas that are trimmed in earth, dried flower and humus nuances. The sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight plus flavors possess excellent delineation while delivering excellent length on the lingering if ever-so-slightly clipped finale. Still, I very much like the mid-palate mouth feel and the overall sense of depth. Note that while this is now fully mature it should be capable of holding at this level for another decade, perhaps even longer. now+
