Juicy and bright in the mouth; more youthful and gripping than the 2000 if not quite as harmonious today. But this structured very long minerally chardonnay ultimately possesses richer fruit. Incidentally owner Dennis Horgan told me that his greatest vintages of the past couple of decades for his world-class Art Series chardonnay have been '97 '95 and '87. 92(+?) points

The 2001 Chardonnay Art Series does not quite measure up to its brilliant 2000 counterpart (one of the finest Australian Chardonnays I have ever tasted) but it is an impressively endowed medium to full-bodied effort offering aromas and flavors of honeysuckle orange marmalade pears and background oak. This elegant layered Chardonnay is buttressed by well-integrated acidity. It should drink well for 5-6 years.

Label

The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & age-worthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.

Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is aromatically complex and packed with flavor but maintains vivid acidity. The wine is fruit forward, typically citrus-driven but also showing pear and nuances of stone fruit. Oak-aging adds depth and gentle accents, such as cinnamon, but no overt woody notes. The wines easily age, and improve, for a good 15 years.

Winery

Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned Australian winery and one of the five founding wineries in the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia. Formerly a cattle ranch, the property was converted to vineyards by Denis and Tricia Horgan upon the advice of legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi when he visited Australia and saw the estate’s potential as being ideal for the production of premium wines.

The estate enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979 and was quickly thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay. Leeuwin now exports to 30 markets. The estate releases wines under the Art Series, Prelude Vineyards and Siblings labels.

Celebrating the combination of fine wine, food, art and music, Leeuwin features an award winning restaurant, cellar door and art gallery. The estate is renowned for staging spectacular events and welcoming visitors from around the world.
