A more restrained yet still classic expression of this site, the 2001 Château Pavie is deeper plum-hued and has a beautiful nose of sweet black fruits, lead pencil shavings, chocolate, and spicy wood-like nuances. It's ripe, full-bodied, and fully mature, with a layered mouthfeel and completely resolved tannins. It's a gorgeous, complex, lengthy Pavie to enjoy over the coming decade or so.

This continues developing and evolving in a positive direction. Popped and poured, this beauty is at maturity offering sensuous textures, ripe, lush, soft, silky fruit, concentration and complexity with a lengthy finish that holds your interest sip after sip. This might get better, but it's drinking so well today, if you own a bottle, you should definitely pop a cork. A great showing for this wine in the mini-vertical, the 2001 Pavie has a slight lightening at the edge of its dark garnet/plum/purple color and a big, sweet kiss of cedar wood, incense, licorice, blackberry and lead pencil shavings. The wine is dense, very rich, multilayered and finishes with at least a 40- to 45-second aftertaste. The 2001 Pavie is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Scents of preserved plums, blackberry pie, and chocolate-covered cherries jump from the glass, plus hints of violets, crushed rocks, incense, and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, it glides over the palate with remarkable seamlessness and satiny tannins, delivering waves of black fruits and exotic spices, finishing long and earthy. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2001 Pavie has a vibrant bouquet of lifted blackberry, raspberry and rose petal scents, joined by touches of cedar and mint from the Cabernets. The palate is well balanced with fine tension, structured but not overbearing. This is less dense than the 2000, with better-integrated wood and a lovely rondeur toward the finish. It seems to gain complexity in the glass, developing some lovely chestnut notes. You can broach bottles now, but they will keep for a number of years. -- Neal Martin

This is hitting its stride now, with a very focused core of raspberry, plum and red currant fruit that is showing some secondary notes while melding perfectly with the singed alder and cedar flavors and tobacco and black tea accents. Mineral and sanguine hints chime in on the finish, which lingers with a sense of elegance. Really nice now, but there's no rush.—Non-blind Pavie vertical (March 2017). Richly enveloping nose. Borderline overripeness. Hot chocolate! Thick and sweet and sort of carved out of stone. Quite porty but with some freshness of fruit. Exaggerated but pleasurable. Drying tannins on the finish. Pretty luscious. 17.5/20
