Aromas of blackcurrants and eucalyptus, as well as some black-olive skin. Medium- to full-bodied with medium-chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. A little lean now, but with a pretty center-palate. Holding on nicely. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 29% carmenere and 4% cabernet franc. Drink now.

2002 was not considered a good vintage because there was some rain farther south. But, in Puente Alto, where the vineyards for the 2002 Almaviva are, it was pretty "normal," and they didn't have the rains in March. It was a warm year, without excess. The wine is quite classical, it has evolved nicely, the palate is still pretty lively and balanced, with developed aromas. It is harmonious and in no danger of going down any time soon. This time they only had Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc (67%, 29% and 4%, respectively). Merlot and Petit Verdot came later. It turns spicier in the glass, with even some curry aromas. - Luis Gutiérrez

A powerhouse especially for the vintage with black currant coffee bittersweet cocoa loam and toast aromas and flavors that run along ripe tannins. Big lush finish is filled with dark fruit and tar. Combines Maipo terroir with a modern style. Drink now through 2013. 10000 cases made. -JM
