The 2003 Château Pape Clément is the red Grand Vin from this historic Pessac-Léognan estate in Bordeaux’s Graves, a Grand Cru Classé property whose roots trace back to the early 14th century and Bertrand de Goth (later Pope Clement V). The château has been owned by Bernard Magrez since 1985. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and is listed at about 13.5% alcohol. Production was substantial for a top wine: Wine Spectator reported “7080 cases made.”

In the glass, reviewers consistently describe a ripe, smoky, earth-inflected profile that fits both the appellation and the very warm 2003 vintage. Wine Spectator (93 points) leads with “intense aromas of crushed berry, mineral, tobacco and smoke,” then calls it “full-bodied with silky tannins and loads of ripe rich fruit,” noting that it “goes on for minutes” and remains “tight and well-structured,” with advice to wait (“Best after 2011”).

The most emphatic praise comes from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, an excellent 95-point review published in 2014. Parker writes, “This gorgeous, fully mature, complex Pape Clement” shows “smoky tobacco, earth, loamy soil, forest floor, black cherries, plums and cassis.” He emphasizes its current drinkability, describing it as “medium to full-bodied, fresh and lively,” with tannins that “have melted into an opulent, fleshy, classic Bordeaux,” and recommends drinking it “over the next 10-15 years,” finishing with “Bravo!”

James Suckling (92 points) captures a wilder, more savory side, citing “earthy and funky aromas…pepper, meat, and raisins,” and calling the palate “full bodied, with big chewy tannins.” He notes it “needs time to soften” and is “a little bit rustic,” but concludes, “I like it a lot.”

Overall, the 2003 Pape Clément reads as a mature, characterful Pessac-Léognan with length, smoky complexity, and a generous, fully developed texture.
