Dried mango, pineapple and lemon aromas with hints of cream follow through to a full body, lightly tannic texture and a long and flavorful finish. Vanilla at the end. Love the experience. Drink now.

Lopez de Heredia is a family-run Spanish producer based in Rioja and regarded as one of the world’s greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877 by Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Landeta. Four generations of the Lopez de Heredia family have devoted themselves to upholding their 140-year tradition of producing exceptional and unique wines.

Tondonia, the winery’s most famous vineyard and product, was established between 1913 and 1914. It extends over 250 acres on the right bank of the River Ebro. In addition to Tondonia, the estate owns three vineyards (Cubillo, Bosconia, and Zaconia) covering a total area of 420 hectares. The soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone.

Lopez de Heredia winery is the oldest in Haro and one of the first three houses in the Rioja region. They use completely natural and traditional methods of winemaking and their grapes are sourced exclusively from their own vineyards. They use typical Rioja varieties to produce the best wines: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo for reds, Viura and Malvasia for whites.

The winery’s commitment to tradition is evident in their 131-years history of using American oak. They continue to have their own cooperage, making them the only bodega in Spain to hand-craft all the barrels used to age their wines.

Sourced from the Tondonia vineyard, this wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. It is aged for 6 years in oak barrels, racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites. It can be cellared for 10 years in perfect conditions with constant temperature and humidity.

This 2004 Lopez De Heredia Rioja Vina Tondonia Reserva is a wine that truly embodies the essence of the Rioja region in Spain. With its striking red color and elegant label, it immediately catches the eye and hints at the exceptional quality within.

Made from the Tempranillo varietal, this red wine showcases the unique characteristics of the region. The 2004 vintage is known for its exceptional weather conditions, resulting in grapes with optimal ripeness and flavor development.

Upon opening the bottle, one is immediately greeted by a captivating aroma that is both savory and developed. Tertiary aromas intermingle with enticing notes of spices, leather, cherries, and balsamic nuances of cigar box and incense. It is a symphony of scents that invite you to delve deeper into the glass.

On the palate, this wine delivers an exquisite balance between roundness and crispness. The refined tannins add a velvety texture, while the subtle acidity brings vibrancy and freshness to every sip. The persistence on the palate is remarkable, leaving a lasting impression that lingers long after the wine is gone.

Renowned wine critic Luis Gutierrez, writing for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, awarded this wine an impressive score of 94 points. He praises its exceptional balance, refined tannins, and the development of savory notes over time. James Suckling, another esteemed critic, also lauds this wine, assigning it a score of 95 points and describing its delightful flavors of dried mango, pineapple, and lemon.

This 2004 Lopez De Heredia Rioja Vina Tondonia Reserva is a true gem that exemplifies the mastery of winemaking in the Rioja region. It is a wine that demands attention and appreciation, and it is best enjoyed now to fully savor its complexity and depth. Whether you are a seasoned wine enthusiast or a curious beginner, this wine is sure to captivate your senses and leave a lasting impression.
