The 2004 RunRig essentially typifies everything I love about the 2004 vintage in Barossa. It has energy and focus, softness where it matters and length above all. The texture of this wine on the palate is superb—silky, seamless, long, gracious. This is balanced, harmonious, sensational. That's about all that needs to be said about this. The largest scaled in the lineup, with the textbook volatile acidity that I always seem to find in this cuvee, the ’04 Torbreck Run Rig is a behemoth and shows massive aromas of violets, plum, blood, and smoke that give way to a full-bodied, unctuous, and staggeringly textured Syrah. While not for the faint of heart, this has real balance and depth on the palate, and shows brilliant underlying structure, ripe tannin, and a blockbuster finish. I’m a huge fan and this is up there with the ’01 Run Rig in terms of quality. A blend of the top barrels from different vineyards, this is awesome stuff and do not let any Aussie bias cause you to miss this wine!

Despite being loaded with complexity—spicy, meaty, savory and vanilla notes all feature in this wine—there’s also explosive fruit. Swirls of blueberry and blackberry flavors are head-spinning and the texture is compellingly rich and velvety. If that isn’t enough, the finish lasts for minutes. A blend of Shiraz from eight vineyards, all at least 90 years old, plus a tiny proportion (3%) of Viognier. Drink now–2024.

Firm in texture, this is raw around the edges but very juicy underneath, brimming with blueberry, blackberry and a distinct floral note from the Viognier. The finish lingers effortlessly against fine, crisp tannins. Shiraz and Viognier. Best from 2010 through 2020. 900 cases made. — HS
