Château Branaire-Ducru is a long-established Saint-Julien Fourth Growth (1855 classification), owned by the Maroteaux family since 1988. The 2006 is the estate’s grand vin, drawn from roughly 60 hectares of gravelly vineyards in the Médoc. It is a classic left-bank blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon: about 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. At the château, lots are typically vinified parcel by parcel in stainless steel, then aged around 18 months in French oak barrels (about two-thirds new), a regime aimed at structure and polish rather than overt sweetness.

In the glass, the 2006 reads as a traditional Saint-Julien with ripe fruit, savory notes, and firm, well-managed tannins. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate notes that Branaire-Ducru “always possesses notes of spring flowers, boysenberries, black currants and graphite,” describing a “medium-bodied classic Bordeaux” with “moderately high tannin.” Parker also stresses it is “by no means comparable to their sensational 2005 or 2003,” but still calls it “an outstanding wine,” and suggests it “should last for two decades or more.”

Wine Spectator (90 points) emphasizes darker, more earthy aromatics—“blackberry, licorice and tar on the nose”—and finds it “full-bodied with soft tannins and plenty of fruit,” concluding, “Not the most complex wine but outstanding,” with a drinking suggestion of “Best after 2014.”

Among the strongest reviews, Wine Enthusiast awards 92 points, highlighting how the vintage’s ripeness shows as “ripe spicy black plums and black cherry spice,” alongside “lively fresh tannins,” adding that “today it is the fruit that dominates.” Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) rates it an excellent 93 points, calling it “bright, fresh, crisp red fruits” with “mocha, tobacco, spice and cedar,” and frames it as “refined… slightly firm,” with a long window: “Drink 2023–2035.”
