Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2023

A monumental bottle of Sauternes despite a moderate level of residual sugar (122 grams per liter), the 2006 d'Yquem displays a singular, distinctive and elegant bouquet with aromas of thyme, sage, curry, baked pineapple...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

It take little effort to find the ripe, sweet, tropical fruits, apricot, candied orange peel, pineapple, vanilla, floral and honey notes in the nose. The wine is sweet, with luscious textures, freshness but not as much...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2009

(94-96 points) Barrel sample. This is the rich wine of the vintage. With its intensen fruit, piles of spice, but excellent balance, this promises flavors of baked apples and intense dried fruits. The botrytis layer is...

Wine Spectator, July 2012

Lovely flavors of apricot, dried tangerine, pineapple and papaya rush along, supported by hazelnut, frangipane and coconut notes. Despite the depth, this is very, very pure, with filigreed acidity carrying the long, long...

Sauternes is the best and most sought-after region for dessert wine in Bordeaux, perhaps in all of France. Chateau d’Yquem is the most celebrated of all Sauternes producers.

The history of d’Yquem can be traced back to 1593, when local nobleman Jacques Sauvage became the feudal overseer of the property. The area was already home to late-harvest wines even then, and the Sauvage family moved things forward, creating “modern” vineyards—and the famous chateau—on the unique hill that contributes to d’Yquem’s outstanding quality. In 1711, the Sauvage family became full owners of the property and managed to retain it through the French Revolution.

The quality and reputation of Chateau d’Yquem wine improved as the vineyard was methodically expanded and enhanced. By the late 18th century, it was celebrated internationally and counted Thomas Jefferson among its staunch supporters. But the house continued to innovate and better its practices. The constructed a large, purpose-built cellar for maturation and aging in 1826 and, not long after, began harvesting in multiple passes to optimize fruit quality. This work was rewarded when Chateau d’Yquem was designated the only 1er Cru Superieur dessert wine in the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

The 2006 Chateau d'Yquem OWC 6-pk is a remarkable white wine that hails from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France. With a beautiful golden color and a cork closure, this wine exudes elegance and sophistication from the moment you lay eyes on it.

On the nose, the aromas are intoxicating and complex. Ripe, sweet tropical fruits such as apricot, candied orange peel, and pineapple take center stage, accompanied by hints of vanilla, floral notes, and honey. These scents transport you to a tropical paradise, enticing you to take your first sip.

Once on the palate, the wine reveals its true character. It is undeniably sweet, with luscious textures that coat your mouth and leave you wanting more. The freshness is present, but it lacks the lift that the best years of this wine offer. However, this sweetness is far from cloying, and the honey-coated tropical fruits and vanilla in the finish are more than enough to put a smile on your face.

Several wine experts have applauded this vintage, with scores ranging from 95 to 96 points. Wine Enthusiast describes it as the rich wine of the vintage, with intense fruit, piles of spice, and excellent balance. The botrytis layer, a hallmark of Sauternes wines, is present but subtle, adding a hint of complexity to the flavor profile.

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, the 2006 d'Yquem is a medium lemon-gold colored wine that offers mouth-coating tropical fruit and baking spice layers. The texture is seductive and oily, with bold freshness and amazing length on the finish. This wine has aging potential and is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 25+ years.

Wine Spectator praises the purity of flavors in this wine, with lovely notes of apricot, dried tangerine, pineapple, and papaya. The acidity is filigreed, carrying the long finish and ensuring that the wine remains balanced and vibrant.

Overall, the 2006 Chateau d'Yquem OWC 6-pk is a truly exceptional white wine. Its complexity, sweetness, and impeccable balance make it a standout among Sauternes blends. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning wine connoisseurs.
