Rich dark classic claret in colour, a sweetness to the palate and the layers and complexity on this are excellent. On aromas alone this displays real class and complexity. Cassis and bilberry notes are clear, we are still in primary fruit territory, but they are beginning to stretch out and get to good drinkability. It has wonderful precision across the palate, intense and complex but far from a monster, this has refinement and a gorgeous juicy drinkability. Opens with an alluring nose full of dark cherries and patchouli. On the palate there’s more dark fruit along with notes of underbrush, the hallmark Pessac elements of barbeque spices and smoke, dark chocolate, anise, black tea and crushed sea shells. This has a beautiful and classy texture and is quite concentrated, but it dances with much finesse across the palate. It really opens up nicely with time in the glass. Enjoy now with some aeration, or hold and follow over the next decade plus. This is a classic.

While it doesn’t have huge power, this wine does have many great attributes. It is smoothly ripe, its open structure a fine reflection of the elegant style, edged with minerality. The acidity is pure, not too dominant, but lifting the generous fruit and final dry character.

Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. Initially this Domaine de Chevalier seems a little muddled on the nose, the fruit rather taciturn. But it unfurls nicely with attractive aromas of crushed stone, pine, smoke and truffle developing with aeration. Understated entry, fleshy blackberry fruit interlaced with liquorice and bilberry that leads to a modern, oaky, succulent finish that demonstrates good depth and persistency.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London.The 2006 Domaine de Chevalier has smudged red plum, bergamot and stewed black tea scents on the nose - quite fragrant if just missing some delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with taut, quite firm tannin. Dark and broody, this is a surprisingly introspective Domaine de Chevalier with a grippy, quite assertive finish. This is a satisfying wine from Olivier Bernard, though at the moment you get the feeling that somebody has said something to this 2006 that has put it into a bad mood. I find there is more finesse on other recent vintage,s but you never know with Domaine de Chevalier because at any given moment it can blossom. Tasted January 2016.- NM
