91+ The Laurent 2006 Chambertin Vieilles Vignes – representing three barrels from two growers, and incorporating some fruit from Clos de Beze – smells of rose petals, cherry jam, and cocoa powder. Sweet, almost over-ripe fruit meets an astringent layer of tannin on the palate, and these tannins – along with a tactile sense of brown spices – make for a finish of grip and sizzle but not much fluidity or charm. It could be – as Laurent suggests – that this wine is simply slow to recover from bottling compared with most of his 2006s. - David Schildknecht
