Served blind against the equivalent from Christophe Roumier, the ultra-rare Musigny is an absolute gem. It has a quite astonishing bouquet with brambly red fruit, raspberry coulis, flint and a hint of oxtail – all with breath-taking delineation and poise. The palate is medium-bodied with intense, weightless red berry fruit and nigh on perfect acidity. It is tightly wound, the finish exhibiting just a little unresolved new oak, suggesting it should be afforded a couple more years in bottle…if you possess one of just 169 bottles! Drink 2014-2025+

Faiveley noted that a new custom-made fermenter was purchased for this wine in 2007 and this explains why it is oakier than in recent vintages. Noticeable wood dominates the spicy red and black fruit and subtle floral notes at present and can also be found, if more subtly, on the rich, full and very classy medium full flavors that possess a velvety, even silky palate impression on the hugely long and mouth coating finish. The wood isn't subtle but the density of the mid-palate is such that it will probably eat it in time though I suspect that this will always rest a bit outside of the typical Faiveley style. Wood or not, this is a serious wine.
