Grown in sand and clay soils on the western coast of Sardinia this is a selection from pre-phylloxera vines. Those old bush vines deliver minerality into their fruit captured here with vibrancy and richness. The wine seems to test a range of directions as it opens its concentrated flavors hinting at cranberries and walnuts tobacco and black pepper. After a day it's more focused the smoky red fruit targeted at mineral tannin. More than anything it tastes of fruit grown by the sea at this southern edge of Sulcis.

Knockout nose is considerably deeper than that of the '08 offering dark cherry dried flowers ink tar and musky dried spices. Creamy and sweet on entry then powerful in the middle with a firm spine of acidity giving clarity and cut to the wine's red fruit garrigue and dried flower flavors. This very well-balanced wine really spreads out to saturate the palate on the long candied red cherry finish. Both riper and richer than the 2008 bottling but has plenty of energy to avoid coming across as heavy or cloying. -Ian D'Agata

Very dark core with dense ruby rim. The nose is big and modern with ripe red and blue fruits and admirable density and complexity as florals combine with deep cherry tar and a touch of chocolate. Alluring and simply delicious in the mouth this has a vibrant spine of acidity that keeps things balanced. Finishing long with fine tannins that are beginning to integrate I'd give this another year or two and then drink through 2021.
