From Howell Mountain the dense purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rancho del Oso (an 1800 foot elevation vineyard) is composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Sweet blackberry black cherry plum anise and crushed rock aromas jump from the glass of this opaque purple-colored wine. Broad and full-bodied on the palate with hints of white chocolate and subtle oak/toast it reveals terrific fruit texture and opulence. Drink it over the next 20-25 years.

Deep dark fruit flavors are complicated by graphite licorice and dried herbs plus a hint of minerality. This shows firm acidity for Howell Mountain along with sound ripeness and expressive aromatic character. Finishes suave and seamless with a continuing mineral element. Much more satisfying than the 2006.

Super inky purple with a saturated core that is opaque and almost black. The nose offers a lovely perfume of rose petals and black fruit matched by mocha and baking spice and underlying notes of crushed earth and minerals. A supple entry provides deep rich blackberry and spicy chocolate that builds with nice balance on the mid-palate of this medium-to-full-bodied wine. With a cleanly precise structure the well-managed tannins have just the right amount of grip to focus the profusion of fruit culminating leading to a 30 second finish. Beautifully representative of Napa Valley mountain fruit and the exceptional intensity of the 2007 vintage.

On the medium to full bodied palate this is made in a style that reminds me more of Pauillac than Napa. The wine is bright with acidity and balanced rather persistent and provides medium length. Capable of aging exceptionally well give this plenty of air if you plan on drinking in the next 2 years or hold for the next 12+ years.
