Game bacon fat and soy; licorice and violet; blackberry and cassis make for a complex aromatic display in Gauby's 2008 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes. Firm and bright this offers impressions of chalk and crushed stone as vivid as any you are apt to encounter. There is a multi-layered yet dynamic complexity here exceptional even by the exalted standards of this estate. Crushed stone peat humus garrigue game and black fruits accumulate without any sense of weight and the finish here clings with sappy intensity and invigorating energy. I would anticipate at least a dozen years of high-performance. -DS

The rich nose expresses terroir and distinct personality through damp earth wild game and other savory aromas along with violets and rich blackberry. Starting to shed some of its tight youthfulness revealing complexity in layered flavors of blueberry dark fruits and wet stone with a touch of vanilla on the lengthy finish. With its remarkable cornucopia of aromas and flavors along with great purity this is like a beefed up Southern Rhône blend. 35% Carignan (from 125 year old vines) 30% Syrah 25% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre aged for 24 months in barriques."
