A more complex and more refined nose that is perhaps not quite as ripe features spicy, fresh and elegant red and blue pinot fruit aromas that possess a distinct floral component and the greater refinement also can be found on the rich and full-bodied flavors that evidence a sleek muscularity that culminates in a powerful, intense and dramatically long finish that somewhat surprisingly, is even more austere. This should be marvelous if given enough cellar time.

This stylish red is polished and laden with cherry, blackberry, floral, spice and mineral flavors. The firm structure creeps up on you, showing its stern side on the long finish. Best from 2014 through 2027. 20 cases imported. –BS

(NM89-91 points) Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. The Echezeaux ’08 is showing just a touch of under-ripeness on the nose compared to Grivots other wines. Very broody, reluctant to come out and play. With a few swirls of the glass, that herbaceous element is less tangible, replaced by some iodine and damson notes. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, good density and weight, but I feel lacking the same level of persistency than either the Beaumonts of the Suchots. Drink 2010-2018.

The 2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru, poured from magnum as there were no bottles left at the Domaine, has a rustic bouquet, quite ferrous in style, actually similar to the DRC that I tasted the previous week. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, again, quite ferrous with modest depth. Just a little greenness on the finish, but there is not bitterness here. Enjoyable in a mature way. -- Neal Martin
