Rich and spicy this is headed in a positive direction already beginning to show the sweet spice and complex fruit flavors of a more mature red Burgundy combined with the sophistication and class of its pedigree. This is harmonious and long with a sweet fruit and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2014 through 2030. From France. -B.S.

The wild nose certainly caught my attention offering Cote-Rotie-like notes of violet pastille smoked meat mint and pepper and a powerful impression of sweetness. Then creamy and sweet in the mouth but with a powerful sappiness to the flavors of blackberry violet and pepper. This doesn't show quite the thrust of a few of these 2008 examples but it offers a wonderfully silky texture for the vintage and finishes with sweet tannins. A beautiful showing and different in texture and style from most of these 2008s. Perrot-Minot indicated that he'd probably bottle most of his wines in January and this one seems almost finished today.

A completely different nose that is quite animale with wild red berry fruit and plenty of underbrush nuances that is trimmed in a bit of wood spice that dissolves into supple fresh and attractively textured flavors that are really quite fine for a young Mazis all wrapped in a deep long and superbly complex finish. In the context of the vintage this is a robust effort though I expect that a decade in the cellar will see it drinking well.

Perrot-Minot's 2008 Mazis-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes displays the overt tanninity and leathery overtones of the neighboring Les Perrieres in addition to which this is one of the few wines in the present collection where one notices an overt sense of new oak. At the same time this exhibits a phenomenal degree of tiny-berried tart but ripe intensity which its author says is a reflection of overwhelmingly millerandage berries "and a wine of that sort" he believes "will age especially long." Peppery pungency invigorating salinity bitter concentration of black fruit and fruit pits all make for a remarkably persistent unremittingly intense and tannic finish. This dense muscle-bound Mazis was among the first of its collection to be bottled early this year. I would expect it to remain vigorous for 15-20 years during which I doubt it will become more user-friendly but perhaps more nuanced. -DS
