Heidsieck Cuvee Rare is a blend of 17 crus which were aged for over seven years in the House’s cellars. The blend is 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, both from Montagne de Reims. The appearance is a dazzling, crystal-clear, citrine yellow gold enlivened by a delicate, shimmering effervescence. The fruit emerges as delicate and golden, with muted exotic fruits (mango and kiwi) and notes of hazelnut, almond and fig. Mild spices (white pepper, smoked tea and cocoa) reflect the wine’s depth but are honed, precise, and in harmony. The palate is voluptuous, with meringue-like delicacy, while nuances of mint tea, lime, kumquat, pineapple and candied ginger evoke distant lands.

The 2008 Piper Heidsieck Brut Champagne Cuvee Rare is a notable offering from the prestigious Piper Heidsieck house, showcasing a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, primarily sourced from Montagne de Reims. This vintage Champagne has garnered high praise across the board, with several reviews highlighting its complexity, elegance, and aging potential.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awards it 93 points, describing it as evolving slowly and advising patience. William Kelley notes, "The 2008 Brut Cuvée Rare continues to evolve at a glacial pace...it’s medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity and a pretty pinpoint mousse." Despite its current state, Kelley believes it has the potential to become a very attractive bottling.

Wine Spectator delivers an excellent review, awarding it 97 points. The publication praises its dynamic nature, stating, "Like a stallion out of the gate, this shows an initial explosion of power...before quickly settling into an elegant gait." The review highlights the wine's racy acidity, fine texture, and flavors of cassis, toasted brioche, and tangerine, with lingering notes of candied ginger, hazelnut, and fleur de sel. This Champagne is recommended for enjoyment now through 2035, with 2,000 cases imported.

Jeb Dunnuck also provides a strong score of 96 points, calling the Champagne "luxurious" with aromas of graham cracker, honeysuckle, quince, and orange zest. Audrey Frick commends its round, opulent nature and fine, pillowy mousse, noting it retains freshness with flavors of apricot and yellow flowers. She advises that it is drinking well now and will hold its own for years to come, suggesting a drinking window from 2022 to 2044.

Decanter offers a 95-point review, describing it as having a "lively first nose of candied lemon, guava, also a hint of lime." The review highlights the Champagne's nervy tension, fine crystalline texture, and long, airy finish. It evolves towards notes of smoke, flint, and vanilla after some time in the glass.

James Suckling gives the Champagne 96 points, noting its fantastic concentration with notes of seashells, waxed and preserved lemons, blanched almonds, toasted coconuts, and a smoky touch akin to tobacco and white ash. He describes it as waxy and textured with very fine, almost imperceptible bubbles and a long, mineral, and serious finish, suggesting it is still tight and can be drunk or held.

Wine Enthusiast also awards it 96 points, praising the Champagne's maturity and minerality from the high Chardonnay content. Roger Voss highlights its nutty flavors and complex texture, recommending it for drinking now or aging further.

Overall, the 2008 Piper Heidsieck Brut Champagne Cuvee Rare is a highly acclaimed wine with a promising future, characterized by its elegance, complexity, and aging potential.
