jebdunnuck.com, June 2019

The 2009 Branaire-Ducru is another killer wine from this vintage that’s drinking spectacularly well at age 10. Based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it’s still...

Decanter, January 2023

A nose of inviting chocolate powder and dark fruits - very specifically aromatic, after a few minutes the soft florals and medicinal herbs come into play. Super sleek, but not round to begin with, more direct and...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2019

Elegant, refined, fresh, pure and precise, the wine pops right from the initial sniff and sip. The freshness in the juicy sweet, ripe, earthy red fruits, with their cocoa accent hits the spot. And the long, polished...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2012

Very supple wine with great richness and density. It is all so complete a pleasure powerful yet also with sweet opulent fruits layered with dark tannins. For long-term aging.

jamessuckling.com, March 2019

Lots of black fruits with some bitter chocolate character give this plenty of appeal. However, it’s a seriously tannic wine that still needs time to fully resolve. Drink now with hearty food or hold. Wait until 2022.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

94+ The 2009 Branaire-Ducru has a medium to deep garnet color and reveals compelling notions of warm cassis, licorice, baked plums and hoisin with hints of sautéed herbs and pencil lead. Youthful and medium to...

Vinous, March 2019

The 2009 Branaire Ducru has a somewhat conservative bouquet with cedar and graphite scented black fruit, touches of brown spice emerging with time. It never quite clicks into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with...

Wine Spectator, March 2012

A ripe chewy muscular style with good cut despite the hefty tar blackberry roasted fig and singed apple wood notes. The long anise-stained finish lets the tarry edge play out though this shows a touch more finesse than...

Château Branaire-Ducru 2009 is the grand vin from this Fourth Growth (1855) estate in Saint-Julien, a Left Bank appellation known for Cabernet-driven structure and restraint. The château describes 2009 as a largely “normal” season, with harvest beginning September 22, and “perfect” fruit. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-led—cited by Jeb Dunnuck as “70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot”—a mix that aligns with the wine’s firm spine and classic Médoc profile.

In glass, reviewers repeatedly emphasize dark fruit depth framed by savory, Bordeaux markers. Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 94) notes “warm cassis, licorice, baked plums and hoisin… with hints of… pencil lead,” calling it “youthful… with a firm and grainy structure and bags of freshness,” finishing “long with great purity.” Neal Martin (Vinous, 93) finds a “conservative bouquet with cedar and graphite,” and a “vivacious, quintessential Saint-Julien finish,” even if it “never quite clicks into fifth gear.”

Several strong reviews rise to the top. Jeb Dunnuck’s 96 is an excellent score, praising a “huge nose of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf [and] cedar box,” with “sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a blockbuster finish,” and projecting enjoyment “over the coming 2-3 decades or more.” Decanter (95) likewise calls it “super sleek… direct and focussed,” with “tannins… well integrated” and a persistent “salty, spiciness,” concluding it is a “clear ‘classic’ hit.”

The structure is still a theme. James Suckling (94) highlights “lots of black fruits” and “bitter chocolate,” while flagging that it is “seriously tannic… [and] needs time.” Wine Spectator (93) captures the style as “ripe chewy muscular,” with a long, anise-tinged finish. Overall, Branaire-Ducru 2009 reads as a polished, high-performing Saint-Julien with both richness and control, and clear capacity to keep developing.
