Château de Camensac 2009 is the Grand Vin from this Fifth Growth (1855) estate in Haut-Médoc, in Saint-Laurent-Médoc near the Saint‑Julien border. The property has been under the Merlaut family since 2005, and by this vintage the investments in vineyard and cellar were beginning to register clearly in the glass. The blend is reported as 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, with élevage in French oak including a significant 60% new barrels.

This was a ripe, generous Bordeaux year overall, but several reviewers note that Camensac leans more controlled than many peers. Jane Anson (93) calls 2009 “one of the more balanced and reserved 2009s of the 1855 grouping,” highlighting “a tighter more confident structure… and a greater clarity” to its aromatics. Her note is detailed and particularly useful for buyers considering maturity: she finds it “enjoyable, ready to drink but will age,” pointing to “fennel, crayon, liquorice notes, and beautiful crushed roses,” with fruit that “remain brambled blackberry and loganberry.” Anson also reports harvest dates of September 23 to October 7, and cites Éric Boissenot as consultant.

Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss delivered an excellent early assessment with a 92–94 barrel range (94 cited), describing it as a “Big, ripe, juicy wine” with “tannins very solid and dark,” plus “layers of new wood, power and considerable density.” That combination of ripeness and structure aligns with the decision to re-offer the wine as an ex-château release after extended cellar aging.

James Suckling (90) frames it in more direct, approachable terms: “Bright, soft and fruity with plum and currant character,” finishing “chewy… Muscular,” and he suggested it was “Better in 2016.” Taken together, the reviews point to a mature, classically framed 2009 with ample vintage weight, clear Médoc character, and enough structure to continue holding well.
