The 2009 Pinot Noir Verna's is an attractive entry-level Pinot graced with plums dark cherries flowers and spices. The warm radiant personality makes the Verna's an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. The Verna's is the only Melville Pinot made in Los Alamos. Consequently it shows slightly firmer tannins and less overall finesse than the rest of the wines all of which come from the Melville property itself. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Melville is one of the better known properties in Santa Barbara. The estate makes a wide range of wines under the direction of oenologist Greg Brewer and also sells fruit to a number of other producers. The 2009 Pinot Noirs in particular are standouts. Brewer vinified the Pinots with one-third whole clusters. The 2010 Chardonnays had only recently been bottled and needed quite a bit of air to blow off some of their reductive qualities.-AG

The forward robust nose is distinctly central coast pinot with its sweet cherry strawberry and roses. Round and lush on the palate the tannins are well integrated tannins supporting the wine without overpowering the bright red fruit. There is good length on the inviting finish which makes you want to keep sipping. With excellent overall balance this is yet another superior offering from Melville.

Melville

In 1996, founder Ron Melville's desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah brought him to the Sta. Rita Hills where he established his winery, situated amongst the beautiful rolling hills where the grapes are grown exclusively in their three estate vineyards.

Melville currently has 120 acres under vine. The soil is mostly Lompoc dune sand, interspersed with clay loam and shallow hard pans of Monterey shale. The estate currently has 16 clones of Pinot Noir, 9 clones of Syrah, and 6 clones of Chardonnay - all on a variety of low-vigor rootstocks. All blocks are fermented in small lots and isolated through their entire period of elevage, which provides Melville’s team with an ongoing exhibition of how they can fine tune vineyard practices in order to achieve the most unmanipulated and site-specific wines possible.

Melville “grows their flavors,” using no new oak and adding only yeast.
