(NM94-96 points) Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. More backward on the nose than the Clos-Saint-Denis, this has a deep, broody nose that despite coaxing, does not want to come out and play. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite masculine and structured with a tight, earthy finish. Good potential, but will require patience.

The 2009 Clos de la Roche wafts from the glass with hints of tobacco, wild flowers and cherries. This is an elegant, refined Clos de la Roche long on finesse and pure sensuality. The gorgeous, finely-knit finish leaves a lasting impression. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. - Antonio Galloni

An overtly ripe and intensely floral nose sports notes of cassis, spice, earth and a hint of menthol. There is exceptionally good richness and volume to the concentrated and muscular large-scaled flavors that possess a velvety, even suave mouth feel before culminating in a very firmly structured yet well-balanced finale. This highly seductive effort is one of those wines that could easily be enjoyed now even though it is very clearly still on the way up and will be for close to a decade to come.

The 2009 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a lucid hue with light bricking on the rim. It has an intriguing bouquet with a touch of menthol and hoisin, almost Bandol-like in style. Some brettanomyces perhaps? The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious and savory. The oak is just a little more pronounced and occludes some of the terroir expression on the finish. Yet unlike some of its peers in this vintage, this one improves and gains elegance in the glass. Tasted blind at the 2009 horizontal at Club 1243. -- Neal Martin
