jamessuckling.com, August 2012

This is a wonderful wine with orange peel, chocolate, currant and blackberries. Full and round with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Very fine. Best ever. Try after 2015.

Wine Enthusiast, April 2013

A Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend, this shows immense density and richness, and it exudes bright tones of cherry, blackberry, chocolate, tar, clove and licorice. The bouquet is elegant and complex, but...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2012

The 2009 Sondraia wraps around the palate with blackberries, smoke, licorice and new leather. Layers of flavor develop on the mid-palate, leading to the dark, brooding, totally explosive finish. Anticipated maturity:...

Wine Spectator, September 2012

A rich and supple texture up front paves the way for cherry, blackberry and violet flavors. As this finishes, the firm structure takes over, which will ensure a decade of development. Fine length. Cabernet Sauvignon...

Poggio al Tesoro is a dream come true for Marilisa Allegrini, who fell for the land and saw its exceptional value and quality. After just a few years and a great deal of hard work, Poggio al Tesoro is now a thriving 70 hectare (173 acre) estate in prime Bolgheri wine-making territory.

The Estate currently has four vineyards: two situated along the Via Bolgherese, the largest one in a village called Le Sondraie near the sea, and the fourth in the town of Bibbona.

Poggio al Tesoro owes a great deal to Marilisa’s brother Walter Allegrini, who chose the parcels of land that would constitute the current estate, aiming for diversification in terroirs and grape varieties. The estate produces wines with a distinctive personality, expressing power and complexity as well as elegance and depth.

Poggio al Tesoro Sondraia is a textbook Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, expertly crafted from Bolgheri terroir. Intense ruby red, the wine has subtle hints of exotic spices and ripe red fruit on the nose. On the palate it is plush, warm and full, with persistent silky and ripe tannins in the finish.

The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted then de-stemmed and gently pressed. Primary fermentation is in stainless steel tanks, the malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine ages 18 months in French oak barrels, half of which are new.
