Wine Enthusiast, May 2013

In the opulent style of superripe Merlot, this is a rich wine that delivers generous black currant fruits with tannins that are dense but not overwhelming. It is finely structured, proud of its elegance, stylish fruit and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

2010: Tiny yields of 21 hectoliters per hectare produced a wine with 15% natural alcohol. The final blend was 73% Merlot 23% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Quite backward as if malolactic fermentation had just...

Wine Spectator, March 2011

Quite primal with rich crushed plum braised fig and melted black licorice notes covered with an ample layer of dark cocoa. A bit squared off now but there's length and a graphite note that merit patience. -J.M.

This wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in 80-100% new barrels depending on the vintage. It then ages in the cellar for 16 to 18 months at constant temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. Annual production is approximately 60,000 bottles.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2010 is the grand vin of this family-owned Saint-Émilion estate, a Premier Grand Cru Classé B situated on the limestone Saint‑Martin de Mazerat plateau just west of the village. The 2010 is a ripe, structured Right Bank blend built around Merlot, with reviewers citing either 73% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) or a similar mix with a small amount of Petit Verdot (Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider). Parker also reports “tiny yields of 21 hectoliters per hectare” and “15% natural alcohol,” underscoring the vintage’s concentration.

Several reviews were excellent, led by two 95-point ratings. Wine Enthusiast (Roger Voss) calls it “in the opulent style of superripe Merlot,” emphasizing “generous black currant fruits” and tannins that are “dense but not overwhelming,” and concluding it is “finely structured” and “set for long-term aging.” James Suckling also awarded 95 points, citing a “wonderful nose with loads of dark chocolate, plums and some coffee,” plus “sweet polished tannins” and a “really smooth texture,” recommending to “Drink from 2017.”

At a slightly lower but still strong level, Jeff Leve (94) highlights the site’s stony imprint, describing “crushed stone,” “licorice,” and “anise minerality,” with an “opulently textured” finish carrying “red and black fruits.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (93) leans more on architecture than charm, calling it an “opaque purple-hued… massive effort” with “high tannins… and huge concentration,” advising, “Forget it for 5–8 years and drink it over the following three decades.” Wine Spectator (92) similarly notes it is “quite primal” and “a bit squared off now,” but with “length and a graphite note that merit patience.”
