The energy and focus that is typical of the cooler sites within the Santa Lucia Highlands comes through in the 2010 Pinot Noir Rosella’s. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are woven together nicely as the wine works its way to a long, focused finish. The Rosella’s is one of the more feminine wines here. This is another terrific showing. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. - Antonio Galloni

Crimson red transitioning to ruby at the rim in the glass, this nearly decade-old Pinot opens with inviting aromatics of leather, cedar and pepper at the forefront with a core of baked cherries, cranberries and cinnamon... Crimson red transitioning to ruby at the rim in the glass, this nearly decade-old Pinot opens with inviting aromatics of leather, cedar and pepper at the forefront with a core of baked cherries, cranberries and cinnamon just underneath. A little more digging will bring you to some dry-earth minerality and dry flowers as well. It transitions pleasantly to the palate, where it is picture-perfect medium bodied with an elegant and restrained fruit-driven attack. The tannins have fully integrated the wine, and together with a solid spine of acidity, lead you on a long savory finish. This single-vineyard release from Bernardus is in a perfect drinking window for anyone who enjoys premium Pinot with some maturity – no need to cellar any further, enjoy it now! Pair this with a cheese plate and good company or serve with a dish of braised beef.

Located in the bucolic Carmel Valley of Monterey County, Ben Pon turned his energies from car design (he developed the Volkswagon van) and race car driving towards winemaking in developing Bernardus Winery. The warmer temperatures of Carmel Valley are more suited to growing Bordeaux varietals so wineries that pursue a passion for pinot noir must secure fruit over the eastern hills in the cooler climes of the Santa Lucia Highlands. One of the top sites in the AVA, Rosella's Vineyard supplies grapes to many of the best wineries specializing in Monterey pinot. The grapes for this cuvee are a blend of 777 and the very rare Pisoni clone aged for 10 months in 40% new oak from four of Burgundy's best coopers. Only 321 cases produced.
