Of course, the 2010 is far too young to deliver maximum pleasure, but it is nevertheless superb tonight. Beams of acidity and tannin give energy to the dark fruit and its accompanying floral/savory/mineral overtones. The 2010 is a classic Philip Togni wine that will thrill readers who appreciate classically built Cabernets. Recent bottles from the early 1990s and 2000s show just how much these wines transform when given the proper time to develop in bottle. At their best, Togni's wines bring together an Old World sensibility with Napa Valley richness, a pretty appealing combination, in my book.

Mocha game smoke graphite and plums are all supported by veins of cool insistent minerality. This isn't a blockbuster Cabernet rather it is a wine that impresses for its finesse and precision. Sweet red cherries mint pencil shavings and violets are some of the notes that are layered into the super-refined finish. As always Togni's Cabernet Sauvignon is distinguished for an extraordinary bouquet that recalls some of the great wines of the Medoc and the structure to age gracefully for years. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 blossoms in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.95+ -Antonio Galloni

The 2010 Cabernet from the Togni family is outstanding, with a bit more early intensity than is evident in the more tightly-knit 2011 version. The mountain cabernet roots of this wine are quite evident in its fine and still quite primary bouquet of cassis, dark berries, stony soil tones, cigar smoke, tobacco leaf and a nice framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a rock solid core of fruit, ripe, chewy tannins, lovely delineation and balance and a very long, youthful and superb finish. This will be an excellent vintage for this bottling. 2025-2075. 93+.

The brilliant Bordeaux-like bouquet is complete with crushed black fruit gravel tar graphite charcoal and cola. Complex and textured throughout the mid palate is layered with abundant black cherry anise menthol and Asian spices. This continues to expand in the mouth until the incredibly long finish. Truly well made this should evolve beautifully for two decades - if you can keep your hands off her.

Winery

Togni, Philip

Winery Description: Philip Togni Vineyard is a family-owned winery located 2000 feet above sea level in the Spring Mountain District just above St. Helena in Napa Valley. The first vines were planted in 1981 and included both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The 25-acre parcel was re-planted in the 1990’s on phylloxera-resistant rootstock and with a focus on red grapes. Togni models their blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot after Bordeaux’s Margaux AOC. Consequently, the are age-worthy, classic in nature and have a distinctly Old World personality.

Philip Togni, a man of Italian heritage with an English accent, earned his degree in enology under the legendary Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux. He went on to work at Chateau Lascombes. Togni recently retired from active winemaking, deciding to slow down a bit at age 96. His career in Napa Valley includes some of the region’s best. Among his winemaking roles were Mayacamas Vineyards in 1958, Chappellet Vineyard from 1968 through 1972, and Cuvaison from 1975 to 1981.

Togni wines have been celebrated almost from the beginning. At a 1990 Brussels judging, their 1990 Cabernet was ranked above eleven other 1990 Bordeaux and California Cabernets by a professional panel and was thought by many to be a French wine. Philip’s daughter, Lisa, long co-owner and assistant winemaker is now fully in charge of the winemaking. Clearly, quality has not suffered. Antonio Galloni awarded the 2013 vintage of Philip Togni Cabernet Estate Sauvignon 100 points.
