The tannins are nicely integrated at this point, supporting the fruit and offering structure through a long finish. A vibrant core of minerality keeps the wine lively, and unlike some St. Emilions, this is not all fruit on the palate, with racy acidity keeping the wine from the over-the-top style you see too often in this appellation. An absolute steal of a wine from an epic vintage, this is drinking well now, and will continue to impress for another 10-15 years at least.

Label

Created in 1996 from a new plot selection, this cuvee is a pure expression of the estate’s oldest Merlot growing in limestone soil. Situated at an altitude of 150 feet, these 70-year old vines are rooted in clay-limestone soil with outcroppings of bedrock. These “old vines”, whose vegetation cycle is particularly long, offer small yields with small bunches of grapes on red stalks… pure caviar!

Quintessence, as its name suggests, is a complex, intense, meaty wine, but also equally refined and subtle, very often recognized for its floral or even licorice notes.

Chateau Mangot

Chateau Mangot is a Right Bank Bordeaux estate situated in the east of the Saint-Emilion appellation, within the boundaries of Saint Etienne de Lisse. The estate has a long history dating back to 1546, described in 1559 as having plots of vines planted in ‘belts’ and ‘lines’.

The estate’s 85-acre vineyard is planted primarily with Merlot complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 40 years with some Merlot parcels over 60 years of age. The vineyard has four zones of terroir that include 21 separate plots at altitudes between 115 and 280 feet. Soils are mostly clay and limestone making for interesting final blends. The greater limestone presence also gives the Mangot wines density and fullness while retaining freshness, tightness and minerality.
