Utterly profound in every way, the 2010 Hermitage les Bessards comes from the steepest, most rugged and "badass" part of Hermitage Hill, the broken granite soils of the les Bessards lieu-dit. Inky colored, thick and massively concentrated, it has sensational notes of liquid granite (the essence of granite!), smoked meats, scorched earth, currants and chocolate on the nose. Full-bodied, frighteningly concentrated, structured and backwards, it needs another decade of cellaring but will keep for half a century. - Jeb Dunnuck

Dark and inviting, with lots of braised plum, fig paste, warm black currant confiture, freshly brewed espresso and baker's chocolate notes wound together and held in check for now by hefty grip. An echo of iron on the finish keeps this grounded. Should unwind slowly, maintaining a serious bass line. Best from 2015 through 2030. 150 cases imported. –JM

Black and blue fruits, incense and candied violet on the heady, intensely perfumed nose. Sappy, penetrating and pure, its deep black raspberry and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Stains the palate and shows uncanny precision for its power. Closes sweet and very long, with youthful tannins and resonating spice and floral pastille notes. - Josh Raynolds

Delas Freres

Founded in 1835 by Charles Audibert and Phillipe Delas, the celebrated Delas Freres winery grows 30 hectares of vines comprising 10 hectares in Hermitage (including the Domaines des Tourettes estate), 2 hectares in Saint-Joseph, and 18 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage.

In addition to the grapes produced by Delas' own wine growing team, Delas' close relationships with like-minded owner-winegrowers ensure that the company is able to source grapes grown on individual parcels, which reflect their own unique terroir.

Exclusively a family-owned operation for over a century, Delas Freres joined forces with Champagne Deutz in 1977. In 1993, Deutz and Delas Freres were approached by the Rouzaud family, majority shareholder in the Roederer Group. They joined the Roederer Group under whose umbrella Delas' philosophy continues to flourish.
