Sweeter fatter and silkier than the Clos de la Roche; at once more concentrated and less complex in the middle. Finishes savory tactile and gripping with very good peppery energy. Magnien's holding lies at the bottom of Chaffots; the vines that go into this wine are picked first then the rest of the juice goes into the premier cru Chaffots bottling.

This is quite ripe though again it does not fall over into surmaturité with its aromas of coffee cassis earth spice and violets. The is excellent verve to the detailed rich and impressively intense middle weight plus flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that imparts a velvety character to the persistent finish. There is a somewhat curious citrus character to the moderately austere finish that my score assumes will dissipate with time as it's the only wine in the range to display this element. Otherwise this is a beautiful wine that allies power with finesse.

The 2010 Clos St. Denis sweeps across the palate with layers of expressive dark red berries licorice tobacco and mint. This is an especially sensual silky Clos St. Denis that seeks elegance and finesse above all else. The 2010 is truly beautiful today but Magnien thinks it will firm up quite a bit in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2025.
