60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Aged 15-18 months in half-new oak barrels. Planted on over 40 hectares in gravelly clay subsoil. Sylvain Garcin Cathiard has owned Haut-Bergey since 1991 and has really lifted the quality of this wine giving it the same treatment as their other great chateaux in their outstanding portfolio. The 2010 is a massive wine with a rich nose of crushed rock wet stone spice and dark fruits. A ripe and velvety mouth feel leads to powerful and structured mid palate. Its medium length finish reveals a good level of fine yet grippy tannins. The power does not overwhelm the wine - it is still in balance. A terrific wine to lay down for a few years and enjoy over the following 15+ years. Wow. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Haut-Bergey 2010 has a very concentrated bouquet with dense blackberry, briary, crushed stone and tobacco on the nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. There is a lot of extraction here, but it is in tune with the acidity and the structured finish has plenty of vibrant red fruit and energy to see it through to the long term.

One of the top values from Pessac Leognan offers aromas of espresso, tobacco, black raspberry and smoke. The smooth, soft textures, forward personality and fresh, ripe berries make this already pleasurable to drink, and with some bottle age, it’s going to get even better. From Helene Garcin, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot displays classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive, attractively up-front style. Some Asian plum sauce is also noticeable in this complex, evolved and delicious wine, which can be drunk over the next 10-15 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage. - Robert Parker
