The large-scaled flavors are notably denser and more powerful than the straight villages cuvée that are underpinned by a very firm but ripe tannic spine. There is a taut muscularity to the driving finish that delivers outstanding length for its class and this should age extremely well, indeed it will need up to a decade to shed its considerable tannins. Outstanding.

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes reveals quite a bit more depth than the straight Gevrey bottling. Black cherries, flowers, mint and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. This remains very much in the Serafin style, which is to say it is first and foremost a wine of textural refinement. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
