The generic Vacheron 2010 Sancerre rouge - from around half each of flint and Kimmeridgian soils as reflects the domaine's aggregate constitution - was raised one third in wooden upright the rest in older barrique and bottled already in August 2011. Dark cherry and plum as well as the piquancy of their pits are already intimated on the nose along with sweet suggestions of buddleia and rose perfume. "We're starting to take great pains to extract very gently and obtain the supplest sorts of tannins in our Pinots" remarks Jean-Laurent Vacheron. The pit fruits then come to the palate accompanied by nutty smoky inflections and mouthwatering veal stock-like savor all of which - like this wine's charming florality - persist in a persistent faintly and not at all unattractively grainy finish. What a triumph this represents for its vintage not to mention a vindication of the Vacherons' approach! Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. --- David Schildknecht
