Château Rauzan-Gassies is a 1855 Second Growth from Margaux, owned by the Quié family since 1946. In 2010—a classic, structured Bordeaux year—the estate produced a wine that reviewers generally frame as serious, Cabernet-led, and built to age, with enough early appeal to drink before full maturity.
Several critics were strongly positive. James Suckling scored it 93, calling it “very floral with blueberry undertones that turn to raspberry sauce,” and praised its “lovely depth of fruit and super velvety tannins,” adding that it “needs five to six years to soften.” Decanter (93) also found polish and aromatic range—“incense, cedar, blackcurrants, vanilla, rose and exotic sweet spices”—and described it as “refined and elegant,” with “crushed-silk tannins” and “lovely” texture and weight. Those are excellent reviews, particularly for a château that has not always been a top performer in the appellation.
John Gilman rated it 92+ and went further on stature, calling Rauzan-Gassies “one of the most exciting upstarts in the commune of Margaux these days.” He highlighted a “deep, complex and very fine” bouquet with “dark berries, sweet cassis, Cuban cigars, gravel, espresso,” and noted a “suave” palate with “firm, well-integrated tannins and excellent length and grip.” He does, however, suggest the estate’s technique may trade a bit of terroir precision for roundness.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate scored it 90, describing “dense purple” color and “sweet notes of underbrush, forest floor, licorice, black currants and a hint of lead pencil shavings,” leading to a “lush, ripe, surprisingly fleshy and succulent wine” that was “approachable in spite of its size.” Wine Enthusiast (91) said the château “has hit its stride,” calling the wine “powerful” and “dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon’s black currant flavor,” while noting a small “touch of barnyard at the end” that is “likely a passing phase.”
Overall, 2010 Rauzan-Gassies reads as a firm, aromatic Margaux with polished tannins, classic savory accents, and credible long-term potential.
