Pretty and silky young Bordeaux with currants and minerals on the nose and palate. Full body, with integrated tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Very fine. Try in 2016.

Chateau Gruaud Larose was established in the 18th century in the commune of Saint-Julien, when Joseph Stanislas Gruaud united three of his estates under the name of “Fonbedeau”, also called Gruaud. He left the property upon his death to Monsieur de Larose, and in 1781 the name of the new owner was added to that of its predecessor.

When Monsieur de Larose died, the estate was divided among his heirs and the property was split into separate estates. Desire Cordier bought the first two shares, and in 1935 bought the last remaining estate. The property was then reconstituted covering 137 hectares of which 68 are under vine. The company changed hands in 1982, 1993, and again in 1997, when the Merlaut family, already owners of several Medoc cru estates, bought Gruaud Larose.

Today, the Gruaud Larose vineyard is composed of the noble Bordeaux varieties, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (3%). The average age of the vines of Gruaud Larose is about forty years, although the most ancient of these are nearly 100 years old.

The chateau also produces a second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose.

Vinification for the second wine of Gruaud Larose, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, takes place in a mixture of wooden vats and cement tanks and the wine is aged in oak barriques (30% new) for 18 months. It can be chewy when young but develops very attractively over time and shows a core of black fruit with complex accents of spice.

Introducing the exquisite 2010 Sarget de Gruaud Larose, a remarkable Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious region of St Julien in Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true testament to the artistry and expertise of its producer, Sarget de Gruaud Larose.

In the glass, this wine presents a deep and alluring red color that captivates the eye and hints at the depth of flavors that lie within. Uncorking the bottle, the rich aromas immediately waft up, filling the air with the intoxicating scents of steeped blackberry, blueberry, and black currant. These dark fruits are complemented by the subtle notes of warm cocoa and tar, adding complexity and intrigue to the olfactory experience.

On the palate, the Sarget de Gruaud Larose reveals its true character. The mouthfeel is luxurious and velvety, coating the palate with a smoothness that is simply unmatched. Integrated tannins provide structure and balance, while the flavors of currants and minerals dance on the taste buds. The wine is impeccably balanced, with a clean and fresh finish that leaves a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critics have recognized the excellence of this vintage. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 90, praising its dark and winey profile, as well as the mouthcoating feel and smoldering tobacco notes on the finish. James Suckling also bestowed a score of 90, describing it as pretty and silky, with integrated tannins and a clean, fresh finish.

For those with the patience to wait, this wine will continue to evolve and mature gracefully. While it is already showing its potential, it is recommended to cellar this wine until 2016 to fully experience its true splendor. However, for those who cannot resist the allure, decanting for a few hours will allow the wine to open up and reveal its full range of flavors.

In conclusion, the 2010 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a splendid Bordeaux Blend that embodies the elegance and complexity for which wines from St Julien are renowned. This wine is a true gem, and whether enjoyed now or aged to perfection, it is sure to delight even the most discerning palates.
