Vigna d’Alceo is Castello dei Rampolla’s first biodynamic wine. It represents a union between the two generations of the Castello dei Rampolla winery: Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot as the founder Alceo, wished and biodynamic as his children, Luca and Maurizia, practice.

The wine is fermented in concrete, then aged in 500L barrels for 12-15 months and in bottle for 18-24. It fully reflects the character of the vineyard from which it originates. It is intense, warm, refined and elegant.Well-ripened red fruits blend perfectly with delicate notes of cigar and tobacco - an amazing concentration with no heaviness.

Castello dei Rampolla’s Vigna d’Alceo 2011 is the estate’s flagship Toscana IGT red from Panzano in Chianti Classico, made from a single six-hectare vineyard. Monica Larner (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) reports it is “a stunning blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petit Verdot,” and notes the estate’s biodynamic farming. Production is small by design, and the wine’s ambition is clear: it is a Cabernet-led Super Tuscan built for depth, polish, and longevity.

The best reviews are emphatic. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awards 97 points, calling the 2011 “exotic, bold and luscious,” and adds that it “captures the natural richness of the warm, dry growing season, yet possesses magnificent balance.” He finds it “in a great spot for drinking today,” showing “some signs of maturity” while remaining “fleshy and vibrant.” James Suckling also gives 97 points, describing a wine that is “very firm and dense with fantastic structure,” with “a core of ripe fruit…currants and blackberries,” plus “minerals and fresh mushrooms.”

Across critics, the aromatic profile is detailed and consistently dark-fruited, with savory complexity. Larner highlights a “perfumed and enticing” bouquet of “dark rose, cherry fruit, spice, leather, cola, grilled herb,” while Wine Enthusiast (95 points) notes “ripe blackberry, red currant, exotic spice, menthol, blue flower,” alongside a “dense, concentrated palate” and “velvety tannins.” Wine & Spirits (94 points) ties the wine to place, citing galestro soils in the Conca d’Oro and calling it “saturated with cassis flavor,” balanced by “savory notes of black olive and blood.”

On timing, multiple reviewers point to patience. Wine Spectator (93 points) suggests “Best from 2018 through 2027,” while Wine & Spirits argues it “needs a good five to six years in the cellar.” Galloni’s recent retaste indicates those years have paid off.
