Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2014

The 2011 Clos Mogador feels ripe, serious and young. Rene Barbier likes to pick ripe grapes but without any raisins making it into the vats. The wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos Mogador vineyard (it’s...

The wines of Clos Mogador have become as famous as other mythical wines of the world such as Italy's Sassicaia and Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux. Located in Gratallops in the heart of the Priorat hills, the estate is owned by Rene Barbier, descendent of a renowned family of French winemakers and one of the founders of the Priorat revolution. He was the first of a group of pioneers who made the “New Priorats” and has worked successfully towards recovering the region’s unique terroir.

In 1979, Barbier purchased a small plot of vineyard in the village of Gratallops which he planted with Grenache and Carignan, along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This was the beginning of his Clos Mogador project. A few years later, he purchased a further 20 hectares in the guise of Manyetes (Vi de Vila de Gratallops) and Nelin (a white wine). Forever obsessed by terroir, Barbier strives to reveal the classic characteristics of this wine region and confesses that he has a weakness for Grenache.

The vineyard site for Clos Mogador is a vast amphitheater of crumbling slate, surrounded by mountains up to 1200 meters high, while the vineyard’s lower extremes are caressed by the Siurana River.

The prestigious Clos Mogador flagship release became Catalonia’s first officially recognized “Vi de Finca” or “estate wine”. Additionally it bears distinction as a D.O.Ca Priorat, which guarantees that all grapes used to make the wine have been sourced exclusively from a single vineyard for at least five years.

A proprietary blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, it bides its time in carefully selected French oak barrels. Clos Mogador is made with affection and dedication, attentively following the traditional artisan methods of the world’s best ‘Grands Cru’ wines.

The 2011 Clos Mogador is a remarkable red wine from the Priorat region of Spain. With its deep, dark color and complex flavor profile, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.

Upon pouring, the rich red hue of the wine immediately catches the eye. Its intensity is a testament to the quality of the grapes used in its production. The nose is greeted with a symphony of aromas, including black cherries, plum, and toasty notes. These aromas are pure, heady, and exude class.

On the palate, the 2011 Clos Mogador showcases its power and depth. The wine is a blend of Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, but it is the terroir that truly shines through. Notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, and sage give this wine a unique and distinct character. The flavors are pungent and full-bodied, with velvety tannins that coat the mouth. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression.

Despite being a warm vintage, the 2011 Clos Mogador maintains its balance and elegance. It is a testament to the winemaker's skill and dedication to producing exceptional wines. With a high alcohol content of 15.5%, this wine is bold and powerful, yet it still has the potential to age gracefully. It is recommended to drink between 2015 and 2025, but for those with patience, it will continue to evolve and develop over time.

The critics agree on the quality of this wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it an impressive score of 96, praising its ripe fruit, supple palate, and long aftertaste. Wine & Spirits also gave it a score of 93, highlighting its immense potential for aging. Wine Enthusiast echoes these sentiments, noting its powerful tannins and toasty, dark flavors.

In conclusion, the 2011 Clos Mogador is a superb wine that represents the best of the Priorat region. Its depth, complexity, and balance make it a standout choice for any wine connoisseur. Whether enjoyed now or aged for a few more years, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression.
