Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2014

The 2011 Clos Mogador feels ripe, serious and young. Rene Barbier likes to pick ripe grapes but without any raisins making it into the vats. The wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos Mogador vineyard (it’s...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2015

Plum, blackberry and toasty aromas are pure, heady and classy. Immediately this wine shows itself to be powerful: The tannins are grating and the overall outlook is far from shy. Toasty, dark flavors of black fruits...

The prestigious Clos Mogador flagship release became Catalonia’s first officially recognized “Vi de Finca” or “estate wine”. Additionally it bears distinction as a D.O.Ca Priorat, which guarantees that all grapes used to make the wine have been sourced exclusively from a single vineyard for at least five years.

A proprietary blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, it bides its time in carefully selected French oak barrels. Clos Mogador is made with affection and dedication, attentively following the traditional artisan methods of the world’s best ‘Grands Cru’ wines.

The 2011 Clos Mogador is a red wine from the Priorat region of Spain, produced by Clos Mogador. This proprietary blend includes Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, and it is known for its robust character and complex flavor profile. With an alcohol content of 15.5%, this wine captures the essence of its warm and dry vintage, which was the hottest in Priorat since 2003.

Luis Gutierrez of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2011 Clos Mogador an impressive score of 96. He notes that the wine “feels ripe, serious and young,” and emphasizes the producer's approach of picking ripe grapes without allowing any raisins into the vats. Gutierrez describes the wine as having notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, and black cherries. The palate is “supple, full-bodied, with pungent flavors, round, velvety tannins and a long aftertaste.” He praises the wine as a “superb effort” for its vintage, highlighting its value and balance. Gutierrez suggests that this wine will be at its best between 2015 and 2025.

The Wine & Spirits review also underscores the wine's potential for aging, giving it a score of 93. The review states, “The spine of this wine is its alcohol, united with its depth of fruit, ripe and black.” It makes a “powerful impression” and is expected to develop more distinct characteristics with further aging. The review predicts that the wine will become more elegant as its “enormous tannic structure” mellows over the next five years.

Wine Enthusiast's Michael Schachner also rated the wine 93 points, highlighting its “plum, blackberry and toasty aromas” as “pure, heady and classy.” Schachner describes the wine as powerful, with “grating tannins” and “dark flavors of black fruits, spice and licorice.” The review notes that the wine finishes with “hard-ripping tannins” and recommends drinking it between 2016 and 2026.

In summary, the 2011 Clos Mogador is a highly regarded wine with strong reviews from multiple critics. Its robust, complex profile and significant aging potential make it a standout from Priorat.
