Only 57% of the production made it into the 2011 d'Issan which tips the scales at a lofty 13.2% natural alcohol. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot it possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as a classic Margaux perfume of sweet blueberries black currants spring flowers and licorice. Ripe and deep with impressive intensity it is one of the stars of the 2011 vintage. The wine's silky tannins fresh acids and stunning length suggest it will drink well for 15-20 years. Kudos to proprietor Emmanuel Cruse.

The nose is closed and minerally tightly wound with scents of limestone and granite. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin crisp blackberry blueberry and a touch of vanilla. It has a gentled but insistent grip a slight saline note towards the composed finish that is focused and poised. This has good potential and continues d'Issan's good run of form.

Beautiful ruby color throughout this elegant Margaux. Inviting aromas of red currant are followed by semi-sweet chocolate and tobacco. Medium-bodied with some grippy tannins toward the finish. I really like the overall mouthfeel and drinkability of this young D'Issan though it will benefit from at least a few years in the cellar. Enjoy 2015-2025.

Chateau d’Issan expresses the exquisite bouquet so characteristic of Margaux, and stands out for its suppleness, subtlety, elegance and long aging potential.

The wine is made from the old vines in the Chateau d’Issan enclosure in the middle of the Margaux appellation. The soil is mainly comprised of surface gravel on a clay subsoil, contributing to optimal ripeness and freshness in the estate’s two grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, half of which are new.

Winery

d'Issan

Chateau d’Issan is located in the center of the Margaux appellation and rated as a third growth in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Mild weather, moderated by proximity to the sea and the Gironde Estuary, provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The vines are, on average, 35 years old. The estate has 44 hectares of vines in Margaux, 5 in Haut-Medoc and 10 in Bordeaux Superieur.

Chateau d’Issan has a long history dating back to the 12th century when it was a fiefdom with the name of La Mothe-Cantenac. It already had an established reputation long before the 1855 classification, reportedly served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henri Plantagenet, future King of England, on 18th May 1152.

The estate has been handed down from generation to generation through inheritance and marriage until from 1575 onwards, it has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family who contracted their name and renamed the property “Issan”.
