The wine boasts abundant varietal character with black fruit and Morello cherry in center stage. Asian spice and barbecue smoke round off the edges and the wine delivers a lavish dose of crushed stone, soda, blue flower and smoked bacon as well. It stands tall with wide shoulders supported by finely etched tannins, thick concentration and a bright spot of acidity on the long finish. - Monica Larner

95+ Readers who haven't tasted Scrio in a few vintages will be taken aback by the 2011. Once an inky, super-concentrated wine, today's Scrio is all about finesse. Once an inky, super-concentrated wine, today's Scrio is all about finesse. Crushed flowers, rose petals, sweet red berries and mint are some of the many notes that blossom in a wine built on nuance and varietal expression. Hints of black pepper, game, lavender, menthol and smoke develop in the glass, adding further layers of complexity. Cool-climate aromatics meet the pure power and breadth of Bolgheri in an utterly compelling Syrah with a bright future. Of all the Macchiole's wines, Scrio is the one wine that has changed the most in recent years. The 2011 represents a move in a very different direction. It will be interesting to see where that road leads.

Brooding at first, Scrio evokes freshly raked leaves, smoky campfires and spit-roasted game. Light seeps slowly through the branches, revealing layers of roasted fennel and freshly cracked pepper, confidently building momentum until the flavors merge in a dynamic burst of black fruits, smoked venison, rosemary and anise that resonate on the palate with extraordinary length. Utterly sensual and pulsing with energy, this will offer pleasure over the next decade. Decant next to a crackling fire and savor with a rosemary-scented rack of lamb and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms.

A structured red with dried-berry, cocoa-powder and coffee character. Full body, chewy tannins and a long, intense finish. Super tannins and fruit. Syrah. Better in 2016.

Wine Spectator, July 2015
A meaty, peppery version, with ample plum and blackberry fruit. The tannins are well-integrated. Concludes with echoes of spice and tobacco. Syrah. Drink now through 2022. – BS

Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.
