Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2019

The most classical of the wines from Muga, the 2011 Prado Enea Gran Reserva comes from a warm year that here was cooler than 2012, when they did not produce it. There won't be a 2013 either. So after this 2011, the...

Muga’s Prado Enea Gran Reserva is made from a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The grapes used for making this wine, along with those for Torre Muga, are always the last ones to be brought into the winery. This late picking ensures ideal ripening. The grapes are fermented naturally in 10,000-kilo oak vats, without temperature control or added yeasts. The maceration time can vary and may go on for up to twenty days. The wine is aged in 16,000-litre capacity oak vats for twelve months, then a minimum of 36 months in oak casks and another minimum 36 months in the bottle. After cask-aging, the wine is gently fined using fresh egg whites.

The 2011 Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea is a standout red wine from Spain's renowned Rioja region. Crafted by Muga, this proprietary blend primarily consists of 80% Tempranillo, complemented by Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. A hallmark of this wine is its extensive aging process, spending around three years in oak and an additional three years in bottle before release.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scores this wine a solid 96, noting its "classical" essence and describing it as expressive with "polished tannins" and flavors of truffle, forest floor, and cigar ash. The wine is praised for its ability to develop further in the bottle, indicating its aging potential.

James Suckling gives an exceptional rating of 99, calling it "the most structured Prado Enea ever." He highlights its "compact" palate with dark fruit, mushrooms, and spice, complemented by "wonderfully polished tannins" and "electric acidity." Suckling recommends enjoying it post-2021, but acknowledges its current impressive nature.

Wine Enthusiast also awards it a commendable 96, describing the wine’s "earthy plum and berry aromas" and its "plush tannins." It is noted for its depth and suggests decanting for immediate consumption, with potential enjoyment extending through 2035.

Meanwhile, Wine Spectator finds it "aromatic and alluring," with a 94 score, emphasizing notes of "forest floor, tobacco, and floral" alongside a fresh, spicy finish. Jeb Dunnuck, who rates it 95, describes a "rich, medium to full-bodied" wine with a "balanced texture."

Decanter shares the enthusiasm, rating it 96 and appreciating its "delightfully classical" style with "pure fruit and fine tannins." Wine & Spirits describes it as "rich in notes of lanolin and bold black fruit," awarding it a 93.

Overall, the 2011 Muga Prado Enea is a refined, classic Rioja that impresses with its structure, depth, and aging potential.
